The craziest part of my schedule is just around the corner and I have a big decision to make. Rindler and I drove to San Diego today but sadly, we only have one full day in the city before leaving for San Francisco. Coming up is the stretch where I drive from LA to Seattle, back to LA and then to Minneapolis in 11 days. My angel of a mother has been calling and reassuring me that she is ready and willing to fly out to the West Coast (from Michigan) and drive with me. I may have to take her up on the offer.
This was another easy drive as the terrain was relatively flat. I have driven over 6,500 miles on this trip and finally my car's “check oil” light came on. I stopped along the way to refill the oil in the car, but I am going to have to get the oil changed properly once I get to San Francisco. I will have a couple of consecutive days off in the Bay Area for the first time in quite a while. I have been insanely lucky not to hit any traffic so far, but I did see my first immigration checkpoint leaving Arizona.
What we listened to in the car:
Doug Loves Movies
The Benson Interruption
Music
As you can most likely tell from my name and the plethora of photos featuring my face on this site, I am not a white person. I have spent the last month driving around the south and in places where I was warned not to stop (by people from the north). I have to say that while I have absolutely been the victim of racism in my life, I did not run into one problem my entire time in the American South and Southwest. I met some amazing people and was treated wonderfully. I have not spent too much time in the south during my life, but nothing that I experienced this summer would give me pause to return one day soon.
Once we got to San Diego we grabbed some Mexican food from a place called Mama Testas. We also made a Trader Joe's run and headed back to our hotel. This is the last hotel I will be staying in for quite some time as I have friends in most of my remaining cities. We will be leaving San Diego less than 36 hours after arriving so I have a lot of exploring to do in a short amount of time.
